The
Indian Wells Elementary School provides a long awaited public primary
educational teaching facility for the Indian Wells area of the Navajo
Nation. The new school is conveniently located and will end long
daily trips via school bus to the City of Holbrook.
Studio SW Architects designed this school to maximize efficiency of construction
materials and methods. The design allows extensive repetition of structural
members and systems while meeting the unique cultural/educational needs
of the school.
Indian Wells Elementary School is comprised of
a single structure with a total
area of 40,500 s.f. The school is located on a 150 acre site bordering
Navajo Route 15 within the northwest quadrant of intersection with
Navajo Route 6 approximately 31 miles north of Interstate 40. The design
meets the State of Arizona facility square footage requirements while
incorporating culturally
significant features and design elements.
The Indian Wells Elementary School is oriented to align with the four
cardinal directions, (East, south, west, and north). The main entrance
faces east and opens into an octagon shaped lobby derived from traditional
Hogan architecture. Classrooms are arrayed in a clockwise orientation
in ascending grade levels. The sequence begins with kindergarten on
the southeast and ending with 5th grade at the northwest. The sloping
and eight-segmented lobby ceiling extending from the walls terminates
with a large diffusing octagonal framed skylight. The Media Center
and Administration Offices are directly across the lobby from the entry
doors.
The Multi-Purpose Room also serves as a community center gathering
space. This space is larger and has a higher ceiling than prescribed
by the State School Facilities Board to accommodate public gatherings.
The Holbrook Unified School District provided the extra funding required.
The building has 23 classrooms surrounding a core area comprised of
a Multi-Purpose Gymnasium/Cafeteria, Media Center, Restrooms, Commercial
Kitchen, and Administration Offices & Workrooms. The building mass
is broken up with pairs of classrooms expressed as separate blocks.
Parapet heights are also varied to strengthen the effect. Most outside
corners are shaped to 45 degree angle to reflect the traditional Hogan
architecture of the area.
The planning of the project involved working closely with the superintendent
of schools, school administration, and Indian Wells Chapter Residents. The site
arrangement provides excellent visibility and access from adjacent highways. |
