| The University of New Mexico Children’s
Hospital and Critical Care Pavilion is a major six-story expansion
to the University Hospital complex. The project is focused
on a new Women’s and Children’s hospital, along
with a new critical care/ICU department, and associated support
and administrative spaces. The multi-cultural themes of the
people of New Mexico will be reflected in the building’s
design. Exterior materials include sandstone to reference the
timeless high desert and metal panels at the children’s
level alluding to technology and the future. In the interior,
cultural themes include references to creation myths and cycles
of life through the incorporation of animal icons or totems.
The New Mexico landscape is featured through imagery such as
mountains and places of power, wildlife and magic animals.
The concept of “Journeys” is expressed throughout
the upper two floors for children with space travel being the
dominant theme. Exterior courtyard spaces will feature a living
apple orchard. |
