FOSTER HALL BIOLOGY CLASSROOM BUILDING RENOVATION + EXPANSION

Foster Hall is comprised of two buildings, totaling 69,185 square feet, connected by walkways at three levels.  The first building, constructed in the 1930’s, contains a basement with two stories above grade.  The second building was constructed in 1969 with an unfinished basement and three stories above grade.  The basement was built out in 1976. 

The 1930’s building is currently a mix of offices, wet laboratories, storage and the vertebrate museum.  The 1969 building is dominated by laboratories with attached offices, as well as general instructional spaces, building services and shared equipment rooms. The project has 30,000 sf of new space and 69,000 sf of renovation.

Many design items were addressed during the renovation and new addition design.  The 30,000 sf addition includes eleven wet labs, an animal surgery room, prep rooms, support spaces, a darkroom, thirty faculty offices, graduate student offices and lounge, conference room, the department office suite and an accessible entry—and is designed to wrap 1969 building with traditional campus architecture.
